Enrolment
Learners can enroll at any time to commence their studies.
Enrolment is for a period of 12 months from the date of enrolment.
Upon initial payment of fees our learning documentation will be issued for your course preparation and classroom attendance.
Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre(WMTC) meets ASQA Standards for individual students by not collecting pre-paid enrolment fees which are above the threshold pre-paid amount of $1,500.
Once we receive your enrolment form we will generate an invoice for your initial payment and for your further payment due by commencement of the course. Payment can be made by Mastercard, Visa or direct deposit.
Qualification Description
This qualification applies to people working in maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of:
- chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
- second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <1500 kW within the EEZ or
- chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ or
- assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer or
- worker in the engine room of vessels <80 m long with propulsion power <3000 kW.
Licensing/Regulatory Information
This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC
AMSA certification will require:
- achieving MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal)
- sea service consisting of:
- at least 180 days QSS on commercial vessels with propulsion power ≥150kW on vessels with inboard diesel engines and a completed AMSA task book
or - at least 360 days QSS on commercial vessels with propulsion power ≥150 kW on vessels with inboard diesel engines without an AMSA task book
or
While holding a workshop skill equivalent qualification: - At least 90 days QSS on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines with propulsion power ≥150 kW and a completed AMSA task book; or
- At least 180 days QSS on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines with propulsion power ≥150kW without an AMSA Task Book
- assessment by an AMSA approved assessor using the AMSA mandated practical assessment (AMPA)
- at least 180 days QSS on commercial vessels with propulsion power ≥150kW on vessels with inboard diesel engines and a completed AMSA task book

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Applicants must be 16 years old to be issued a licence.

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning (RPL)
Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning (RPL) are two ways you can gain credit for your previous study or work experience when enrolling in a VET course.
Credit Transfer
WMTC may apply a credit transfer. Students will be requested to submit their qualification(s) for the credit(s) they have applied for.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is offered to all students enrolling in WMTC qualifications.
Contact us to discuss your application for RPL. We will email a Candidate Self-Evaluation Form for your completion and WMTC assessment.
The document is for the candidate to assess their suitability for RPL process, by asking them to consider each of the points and assessing their ability against the task. It has been broken into smaller skill groups, clustering like activities together to enable ease of completion. It is then reinforced by the candidate’s supervisor’s comments, both against tasks and as a summary for each group. This serves as third party validation of the candidate’s claims.
